Artist Statement
I am a printmaker with deep roots in North Central Washington. Through woodcut printmaking, painting, and collage, I explore themes of wilderness, climate change, and the complex ecological stories that occur underfoot, overhead, and out of sight. My creative work is underpinned by the time I spend mountaineering, commercial fishing, and working as a researcher and educator in environmental fields. I make artwork to revisit and intuitively express these far-flung experiences.
Bio
I’m Claire (Cal) Waichler, she/her, from the Methow Valley in Washington state, the traditional lands of the Methow people. I migrate to Chilean Patagonia and Alaska for seasonal work and a love of place. I hold a BA with honors in environmental science from Colby College, where I also minored in printmaking. Alongside my art practice, I am a field biologist, commercial fisherperson, ski coach, science educator, and art educator. I have worked with the Cascades Wolverine Project, Inspiring Girls* Expeditions Alaska, Home Range Wildlife Research, North Cascade Glacier Climate Project, Methow-Okanogan Beaver Project and Round River Conservation Studies.
