Artist Statement
I am a printmaker from Winthrop, Washington, USA. My creative works channel lived field work experiences ranging from glacier research to wildlife tracking and skiing amidst wolverines. Through woodcut and other media, I explore relationships between climate change, mountain ecosystems and human experiences of environmental change. I am particularly interested in forging visual stories of changing or past and future landscapes to catalyze climate action and restorative engagement with the earth.
Bio
I’m Claire (Cal) Waichler, she/her, from the Methow Valley in Washington state, the traditional lands of the Methow people. I migrate to Chilean Patagonia and Alaska for seasonal work and a love of place. I hold a BA with honors in environmental science from Colby College, where I also minored in printmaking. Alongside my art practice, I am a field biologist, commercial fisher, ski coach, science educator, and art educator. I have worked with the Cascades Wolverine Project, Inspiring Girls* Expeditions Alaska, Home Range Wildlife Research, North Cascade Glacier Climate Project, Methow-Okanogan Beaver Project and Round River Conservation Studies. I find joy meandering through mountains like the North Cascades on my feet or skis.
Read a recent interview about my creative practice in the fall 2025 Methow Arts Mag here.
