<image:caption>Each of the five animals in this print are made up of shapes that were inspired by the patterns of snow melting off of the glacier’s blue ice. Although they rise from a common source, each animal has their own character and story.</image:caption>

<image:title>Glacier Blog - Scroll II - Two scientists “go fishing”. They lower a weighted and metered rope into a deep crevasse on the Easton Glacier.</image:title>
<image:caption>By collecting data on snow depth, the team can calculate the mass balance of the glacier. In a good year, thick snow insulates the glacier from melt and there isn’t much bare ice to be seen. The rope sinks 3, 4, 5, meters down into the snow-topped crevasse before reaching the glacier ice. To stay healthy, the glacier needs to retain snow over 65-70% of its area. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad years when snow vanishes from much more of the glacier.</image:caption>

<image:title>Glacier Blog - Scroll II - The stream rips downhill, across vacant moraines, through meadows and into the lush forest.</image:title>
<image:caption>The cold water carries nutrients and organic carbon that sustain ecosystems. It can be rich in glacial flour, the fine sediment that diffracts light in such a way that lakes and streams appear milky green or brown. I envision the stream and its sediment nourishing trees, fish, marmots and flowers on its journey to the sea.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Glacier Blog - Scroll II - Meadow, Pika, Ellipsis.</image:title>
<image:caption>The active pika collects mouthfuls of alpine grasses and flowers. She doesn’t hibernate, so she survives off of foraged haypiles throughout the winter. Pika live in talus fields, using rocks as a pantry and a shelter. They temperature sensitive, and can die when exposed to much more than 70° F. This animal considers her next move: Move up into the empty moraine? Will there be flowers?</image:caption>

<image:title>Glacier Blog - 2.1: Going to Stehekin - A settler named Ella Clark recorded this creation story from the Chelan nation: when Coyote came to the animal people along the Chelan River, he said to them, “I will send many salmon up your river if you will give me a nice young girl for my wife.” But the Chelan people refused. They thought it was not proper for a young girl to marry anyone as old as Coyote. So Coyote angrily blocked up the Canyon of Chelan River with huge rocks and thus made a waterfall. The water dammed up behind the rock and formed Lake Chelan. The salmon could never get past the waterfall. That is why there are no salmon in Lake Chelan to this day.” From Indian Legends of the Pacific Northwest, 1953.</image:title>

      <image:title>Rivering - Watering the Seed</image:title>
<image:caption>Already, so much energy has been put into restoring this system for fish and natural flows, with much more to do. I’m lucky to lend my bit to restoring creeks and salmon habitat with the Methow Beaver Project. Through a combination of engineering, experimentation and elbow grease we store water for the future. What will work? We recruit beaver, or at least their logic, to develop solutions for our ecosystem, wildlife and people. Restoration is a never-ending striving toward a system that is better for all beings. Working in this field has been a unique invitation to witness this ever changing watershed and the inspiration to develop community-engaged art about it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art - Wolverine - Art for a Cause</image:title>
<image:caption>This print was inspired by personal experiences in the North Cascades and conversations with field biologist Steph Williams. In September 2020, the piece was auctioned off to benefit the CWP and the continued study of wolverines in the North Cascades.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art - Wolverine - A rare snow obligate weasel…</image:title>
<image:caption>tells an intricate tale of climate change and the impact of backcountry users on wildlife. With only 30 remaining wolverines in the North Cascades of Washington State, disturbances from humans and human caused climate change pose a serious threat to this impressive, fierce and mysterious animal. Denning is the most vulnerable period of the wolverine’s life cycle. The hidden story of a wolverine mother and her kits is imagined in my piece.</image:caption>
